How do Affinity Schemes work?
There are now several examples of major charities and local church groups entering Affinity Schemes with a supplier of 100% green energy. For example, Christian Aid has entered an Affinity Scheme with Ecotricity and Tearcraft has entered an Affinity Scheme with Good Energy. When you ring the company you want to change to, you quote the charity you want to support, and the energy company pays them what is essentially an introduction fee. This means the charity gains donations of around £15 for every domestic user and about £60-100 for a church that joins the Affinity Scheme. Will the electricity cost more? Possibly. The experience of both church and domestic users is, however, that the difference is about £20 a year. This may be a consideration for people on very restricted income, but for most people it is a very small amount when we consider the seriousness of climate change and the destruction of the environment.
