How do ADS-B position reports compare to other search-and-rescue mechanisms?
ADS-B information contains a highly accurate latitude-longitude and altitude position of aircraft. For search and rescue, however, the last known position of the aircraft is usually the piece of data needed, and the aircraft may have been flying out of coverage or below coverage of an ADS-B ground station. ADS-B information is used in conjunction with other search and rescue information (e.g., ELT, flight following) to locate missing aircraft.
