How difficult is to maintain a saltwater aquarium?

If you have never kept an aquarium before, I would recommend trying a freshwater tank for a while first. If you have kept freshwater fish, then salt water really isnt all that more difficult. Start with a larger tank. A larger body of water is easier to keep stable than a smaller one. I wouldnt do a saltwater tank any smaller than 55 gallons. If you can go bigger–do it. You must test your salinity daily. When the water evaporates, the salt does not & it raises your specific gravity. If you can get a handle on this, the hardest part is done. Dont skimp on the filter. Buy a large bio-wheel for your tank. Salt water fish are more expensive, but they are beautiful fish to keep. Adding anemones and other invertabrates make the tank even more interesting. I have a saltwater tank & love it. It isnt that much more work than a freshwater tank, although it does cost me a little more.
