It’s not pointless to learn Norwegian, even though it’s true that most Norwegians speak excellent English. As a tourist, it’s very easy to get around on just English. However, if you spend an extended period of time here or want to go out with a group of Norwegians, speaking the language is important. People get tired of speaking English by the end of the night, and will start talking to each other in Norwegian. You can feel very left out if you don’t at least understand the gist of the conversation. I think Norwegian is probably the easiest language to learn for an English speaker with little exposure to other languages. If you know another Germanic language, it’s really easy, and grammatically simpler than both German and Dutch. I learned Swedish first to fluency, so it’s a bit different for me learning Norwegian, and probably harder to switch over (similar but sometimes with opposite grammar/usage) than if you’re learning it from the beginning.
