How difficult is it to install an outdoor electrical outlet?
I’m tired of running extension cords out the windows every time I want to use my weed trimmer. You can usually add a new outdoor outlet in just a few hours. You must install a GFCI outlet, which will provide protection from shock in outdoor and damp locations. The process is actually the same as if you were going to install a new outlet between two studs inside your home; you’ll be drawing power from an outlet on the interior side of the wall. You can also supply power to a new outdoor outlet by tapping into a basement junction; this requires more extensive fishing of wires but allows you to put the outlet almost anywhere you want. If you need an outlet for heavy-duty use (big power tools, lots of Christmas lights, or anything over 300 watts), have a licensed electrician run a new circuit from the main electrical panel to the new outlet. When you decide to install a new outdoor outlet, be sure to obtain a permit and check with your inspector on any special restrictions or requirements.
