How did you decide to start an NGO like Sulabh International Social Service Organisation?
I lived with my grandfather at his house. It was a big house and had every amenity but like many olden day houses, there were no toilets. This created a huge problem especially for the women of the houses. As I grew up, I became more and more aware of their inconvenience and decided to do something to put an end to their trouble. So in 1970, I built private toilets and introduced this entire system in Bihar. Before that, most families had no private toilets. How far are the Sulabh toilets serving the people today? Sulabh is no longer about private toilets only. It has more than 6,000 public toilets in 25 states and four union territories in India. It also has branches in Afghanistan. What are the different kinds of Sulabh technologies? One of the major technologies used by Sulabh is the twin-pit pour flush toilet, which provides an onsite human excreta disposal mechanism.
