How did WW1 change the way Canada felt about itself as a country?
It gave it a sense of identity as a nation. It stopped thinking of itself as a country built by others, and starting seeing itself as a country defined by its people. It no longer looked to London alone, but started looking to itself. The war enabled Canada (and Australia) to view themselves as part of a team of like-minded nations, rather than junior partners in a organisation lead by Britain. It took over many of the old British controlled areas of life such as immigration and trade after the war, and it consciously drew closer to the US. Before the war Canada was a ‘child’, afterwards it was a ‘young adult’.
