System owners asked for and got machine instructions to do “population counts”, leading zero and later a bit matrix multiply functional unit. BMM was provided as an option on C90 and standard on all T90 CPUs. Hardware based gather/scatter instructions were included in the EL and later systems. This instruction allowed the compilers to manage array indexed data more efficiently.
