How did Thousand Island dressing get its name?
George Boldt, one-time owner of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York and of the Bellevue-Stratford in Philadelphia. George was cruising aboard his yacht along the 1000 Islands on the St. Lawrence River when this dressing was first served to him. He called it 1000 Island Salad Dressing in honour of the area where it was first served. The steward who made the dressing was promoted to work at the Waldorf Astoria and gradually worked his way up to the position of Oscar at the Waldorf.
