The Guinness Book of World Records says that “the tallest recorded man of whom there is irrefutable evidence was the pre-acromegalic giant Robert Pershing Wadlow, born in Alton, Illinois, on February 22, 1918.” He was 8 feet 11.1 inches (and still growing) when he died on July 15, 1940 “a result of cellulitis of the right ankle aggravated by a poorly fitted brace”.
