How did the use of tanks play in the defeat of Germany in WW1?
The role of tanks in WW1 was not as crucial as some believe, but they did help in some way to break the deadlock of trench warfare. They gave troops some cover from the machine gun fire that had kept them pinned in the trenches for months at a time. However, tanks in WW1 did have some serious drawbacks. They were slow, cumbersome and they broke down easily. The lack of suspension also made it very difficult for the crews. There are reports of tank crews being knocked unconcious while thrown around inside the tank as it crossed difficult terrain. The technology quickly evolved however.
