How did the Truman Doctrine affect Americans?
The Truman Doctrine was a policy of supporting anti-communist regimes with military and economic aid. The Doctrine was first used in support of democratic governments in Greece and Turkey. The purpose of the Doctrine was to compliment the policy of containment that Truman supported. The Communists would be contained to the area they currently held and would not be permitted to expand. This obligated the US to use military force when necessary. It would cause the deployment of troops to overseas areas and cost the taxpayers money to supply and support the troops. This also caused the US public to be a bit less concerned with an all-out war with the Soviets. The Truman Doctrine was a bit of a “hot” spot in the Cold War but not an all-out war with Russia.
