How did the tradition of the Pittsburgh Steelers “Terrible Towel” begin?

0

The Terrible Towel started as a gimmick prior to a playoff game in 1975. They wanted something lightweight and that everyone would already have one of. The announcer of the Steelers at the time, Myron Cope advertised it for the weeks leading up to the game. The towel first showed up December 27, 1975 in the playoff game against the Baltimore Colts. 30,000 towels are said to have been in the stadium that day. The Steelers ended up winning the Super Bowl that year.
