How did the supplemental survey of Hospitalist Management Companies differ from the standard survey?
• In recognition that it would be difficult for multi-state hospitalist only groups/management companies (often with hundreds of hospitalists) to participate in the survey, SHM designed a supplemental survey, making it easier for them to provide data. Essentially, the supplemental survey asked the organizations to provide “summary average data” (e.g., the average total compensation for their hospitalists) rather than providing individual hospitalist data. As a result of this approach, SHM loses information about the data distribution, but was able to compute meaningful averages for key metrics. • SHM received completed supplemental surveys from 8 hospitalist management companies, representing almost 2,800 hospitalists.
