Geoffrey Balkam, Climax-Scotts schools superintendent, dies of injuries from weekend motorcycle crash Monday May 18, 2009, 7:40 PM KALAMAZOO — Climax-Scotts schools Superintendent Geoffrey Balkam died Monday morning from the injuries he sustained in a motorcycle crash Sunday in Berrien County, authorities said. Balkam, 57, lost control of his motorcycle and crossed the center line on Red Arrow Highway in Coloma Township, according to a news release from the Coloma Township Police Department. Balkam and his passenger, Jennifer Larsen-Russell, were thrown from the motorcycle and landed under a vehicle driven by Julie McDonald, 42, of Battle Creek. Both Balkam and Larsen-Russell were airlifted to Borgess Medical Center where he later died from his injuries. Larsen-Russell, 57, of Portage, is listed in critical condition, the news release said. McDonald and her passenger were not injured. Balkam had been superintendent in Climax-Scotts since 1997. Sources:
