How did the shamrock become the symbol of Ireland?
Its not, but it is a major misconception. Tradition says that st. patrick, in attempting to explain the meaning of the holy trinity, picked up a leaf of shamrock to illustrate his point of three parts to one whole object. It became a popular symbol in the last 200 years. Before that the harp was, and still is, the official symbol of Ireland.
