How did the Romans take control of Britain?
This enquiry gives children an understanding of the nature of Roman conquest and military rule. It challenges them to explain how, within 50 years, the Romans were able to establish their rule over most of Britain. The hook is a video clip showing a re-enactment of the Roman invasion in 43 AD. Children begin to speculate as to the reasons for the Romans’ success: weapons and armour, tactics and training, leadership and discipline, roads and forts. They find out more about these aspects using information books, websites and videos. Children use their knowledge to plan a Roman Conquest Museum. They make a plan for their museum, deciding how much space will be given to different aspects. Children provide pictures and text for different parts of the museum.
