Girls received much less education from the State however the number of female graduates was increasing. Women started to demand equality and the best way in which this could be achieved was through vote. At that time no woman was able to vote. This caused the set of the National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies, in 1897, and the Women’s Social and Political Union in 1903. The aim of these was to win more rights and add importance and respect to the image of a woman. The more ‘militant’ suffragettes courted, used vandalism and went on hunger strikes to win great publicity.
