How did the Rich people live in 19th Century Victorian England?
Rich is a subjective term. There were families from the Aristrocratic Titled class that would not have considered themselves ‘rich’ although they lived in huge houses, had inherited lots of ‘things’, had staff to take care of the mundane details of living, but could not afford a new car, they were curtailed by the inheritance taxes that had to be paid when a death occurred. Some of these families depended on making a rich American marriage to save their estates. Consuelo Marlboro is an example of a rich American girl forced to marry a English lord. She was a Vanderbuilt and her pushing mother ruined her life by forcing her to marry someone she did not love, or like. Then there were the “middle class, industrial rich” who were flashy, vulgar and believed they could buy class.
