How did the railroads change time in the US?

Every large town set it’s ‘Local time’ by when the sun was directly overhead at midday. This means that if you travel 1000 miles time will be around 1 hour different between these two point. Railroads trains travelled between distant towns and needed to work to a standard timetable. ‘Local time’ had to be sacrificed for ‘Standard time’ and there are a number of time zones in USA since it is so wide.
