How did the Quality Learning Academy concept come into existence?
District 11 leadership determined that in order to close the achievement gap the district is currently experiencing, high quality teachers were essential. The Professional Development Department was then charged with developing a program that would address this need. Preliminary work had been under way since spring 2006, when an initial needs assessment was administered to all teachers and building administrators in collaboration with the Colorado Springs Education Association. Central Leadership also participated in an evaluation of the needs for teachers and building administrators. A committee was convened in January 2008 consisting of 18 participants representing Teachers, Executive Directors, Learning Resource Services (LRS), Response to Intervention (RtI), Attendance, Evaluation and Research Office (AERO), Special Education (SPED), Curriculum, Business Services, Educational Support Professionals, and the Colorado Springs Education Association.
