How did the numerical signals in football originate, and what do they mean?
The Numerical signals originated when football came to America. They started as word signals to allow the players to know if the play would be either a kick or a run. These evolved into sign signals, or body signals that represent these plays. Eventually, this evolved into the numerical signals we have today. They are meant to inform the team of what play is going to be used, while keeping their play a secret to the other team. Normally, the quarter-back calls the signals.
