How did the NSPCC get involved in work with sport?
The NSPCC has been working with sport governing bodies for several years to improve the safety of children involved in sport. Through our Safeguarding Children in the Community initiative we provide a consultancy service to support organisations that provide activities to children, including those outside sport. We help such organisations draw up a child protection policy and a set of procedures to ensure that the best possible practice is followed to identify and eliminate any abuse of children. In 1999 Sport England and the NSPCC established the Child Protection in Sport Task Group to establish a National Action Plan for addressing the issue of child abuse in sport. The Action Plan proposed the establishment of the Child Protection in Sport Unit, as a collaboration between the NSPCC and Sport England, to co-ordinate and support implementation of the Action Plan by sports organisations.
