How did the Nazi Government set about providing jobs for the unemployed in Germany after 1933?
Initially, a huge public works program was implemented. The main project was construction of the German motorway system, the autobahns.The Nazis deliberately made sure the construction was labour intensive, with most of the work being done without the use of heavy machinery. This was so construction would take longer, thus keeping more people in work longer. Beginning in 1935, the Nazis started rearmament.Under the Treaty of Versailles, the German army was limited to 100,000 men, and was not allowed tanks. There was also no airforce, no u-boats and no large warships allowed. So, once rearmament started, there were jobs in the army (conscription was reintroduced) plus in the new German airforce (the Luftwaffe) and an expanded navy. Further, these new soldiers,sailors and airmen needed to be uniformed and equipped, so this provided many new jobs for German industry.
