The Indian Nationalist movement The Nationalist movement pivoted on issues of Indian Identity. Traditionally during periods of imperialism there were 3 classes of Indias: Elite, Middle and Lower. Elite Classes were well regarded by the British, while lower classes were indifference to the British. All classes expressed a certain subordination to Imperials (generally speaking, this is not to say that ALL people did.) However, the middle class is what stirred the national movement. They were TOO Indian to be English, yet being “English” was the mark of society at the time… Hence this inferiority complex led to a revolution, where Indians learned to become Indians and what it mean to be Indian This led to a centralization of indenity. Things such as the railroads were built, as were Indian presses. Historically, Indian identity has been fragmented by different regions and trying to come up with a single identity is not an easy task.
