It’s actually an old breed of unknown origins. We’ve seen them in paintings of the European royal court where they were very popular. But they were also used underground in the coal mines to pull carts. The Falabella family in Argentina started breeding miniature horses in the 1840’s and revived interest in the breed. We now have several American registries: American Miniature Horse Association for horses 34″ and under, The American Miniature Horse Registry, AMHR, has two divisions–A for 34″ and under and B for over 34″ to 38″ minis. The AMHR is the oldest of the mini registeries. The World Class Miniature Horse Registry, WCMHR, also registers A and B. Some of my horses are registered in all three, some in two, and some in one. Local clubs are available throughout the country as a way for people to meet other people with minis. These clubs are a wonderful way for beginners to learn and “get their feet wet” with minis.
