How did the Mayan cut the stones for their step pyramids?
http://www.calleman.com/img/mayan_pyramid_2.jpg Mayan Pyramid of Kukulkan Maya buildings were typycally made of limestone, stone was cut in quarries and then moved to the sites. Limestone in its bed is soft enough to be cut by stone tools, the limestone hardens in the sun afterwards. We can say today that pyramids were build without metal tools (they used Obsidian and Flint). Some interesting features of the Maya pyramids are that they were composed of step-like foundations (usually nine) and very steep steps, stone blocks were cut on top of a rubble-fill core and were often built on top of older, existing temples and pyramids encasing the older architecture within.
