How did the mandate of heaven affect social values in China?
Hey, Mark. Mao has nothing to do with the Mandate of Heaven. But as for the question, this is one that you are going to have to formulate your own thesis on. It is going to be hard to make a tie between the mandate of heaven and social values. The Mandate of Heaven affected the way in which Chinese viewed their leaders, and implied that only those who governed in the interest of the people and of heaven could lead. It didn’t mandate that the people act a certain way towards each other. You can look at the two links I gave you in the last question you posted regarding this subject, but if this is the avenue you are take it is going to be hard to prove any definitive connection between the two. I would suggest working on how the concept of filial piety would have been strengthened by the Mandate of Heaven. Filial piety was the cornerstone of Chinese social values for thousands of years and you can see a connection between the two. Good luck on your paper.
