How did the Interstate Highway System come to be?
In 1944, Congress authorized construction of an interstate expressway system connecting major cities and industrial centers. No money was involved in the bill. The project never took off until the awarding of the first contract for I-70 in Missouri, in 1956. North Dakota was the first state to complete its Interstates.
