How did the idea for a Latin-American film festival come about?
Our first one was in 2007 … and it was more of a tribute to Argentine filmmaking. At the time—I don’t want to compare it to the French New Wave, but at the time there was definitely this wave of amazing films that were coming out of that area. So we presented four different double features, showing two films from the same director each night. Argentine cinema is one of the most interesting and acclaimed throughout world cinema at the moment, there’s a hotbed of activity among the filmmakers there. But we initially were just trying to consolidate a bunch of films from Argentina and make it more known that there’s great filmmaking going on there. And if you look at Latin and Central America as a whole, it’s one of the most exciting places for film in the world right now. The Argentina showcase was really well-received by the public and made us realize this was something we needed to focus on and add to our regular screenings around the year.
