It wasnt the Sovjet union, It was Hitler and Nazi Germany. In Europe in the 1930’s there was a massive financial crisis (way bigger than now) Hitler got people to believe that it was all the fault of the Jews. (at that time Jews owned many of the banks) They called it ‘the Jew problem’ and they basically decided that Jews were second class people and they had no rights. The Nazi’s first housed all the Jews in seperate (walled) area’s and later started to deport them to work camps. Some of these work camps were transformed to ‘destruction camps’ where they started killing them. The holocaust was not just about Jews, all people that didnt fit the ideal of Nazi Germany were brought there. This often forgotten group included gay people, black people (there werent that many in Europe back then), Roma’s (Gypsies), ‘socially unadapted’ people, (mentally) handicapped people and people that were in the resestance.

At the same time, with cooperation from local authorities, they set up camps as concentration centers within Germany. One of the first was Dachau, which opened in March 1933. These early camps were meant to hold, torture, or kill only political prisoners, such as Communists and Social Democrats. Eventually, the Nazis imprisoned Jews, Gypsies, Jehovah’s Witnesses, homosexuals, critical journalists, and other undesirables.
