How Did the Forced Unionization of Day-Care Workers Happen?
The union was forced on the day-care providers after a certification election conducted by mail in which only 6,000 day-care providers out of 40,000 voted, according to Patrick Wright, a lawyer for the Mackinac Center Legal Foundation. This unionization means that paycheck deductions of $3.7 million annually are given to AFSCME. The unions then give much of the money to politicians, overwhelmingly to the Michigan Democratic Senators, Congressmen and Governor Jennifer Granholm. “This is a way to get membership and money….for more political clout.” stated Wright. Wright filed a lawsuit on behalf of the day-care owners against the Michigan Department of Human Services. However, the case has been dismissed.
