The election of 1800 was the most important election in American History for a number of reasons. First, it was the first time EVER, in the history of mankind, that power had been transferred from one group to another without bloodshed and war. The Federalists under Adams favored a strong central government, national bank, and few individual rights. The Anti-Federalists under Jefferson’s Democratic-Republican party were diametrically opposed in almost every way: strong state government, limited central government, property rights, rights of the individual. No one knew after the election (which lasted forever and was the closest ever) what would happen. Would the Federalists give up power peacefully or would there be revolution, secession, or civil war. Jefferson repealed the Alien and Sedition Acts, brought the Democrat-Republicans to power for a period of years, and indirectly brought about the demise of the Federalist Party.
