How did the British Empire change India?

Sadly, I am not from India. But I think that India is generally better off because of British involvement, particularly British engineering and organisation, e.g. many of the trainlines which are used extensively in India today were made under British supervision. In fact a lot of the troubles concerning wars of religion came began during the year that the British actually left India in 1947. Before that time, the British would have prevented any major uprisings caused by these petty disagreements but with British authority having disappeared, there was nobody to effectively prevent the Hindus and Muslims openly attacking each other. That doesn’t mean I wish Britain still had control of India, but perhaps if they had waited four more decades I think some of the troubles which have killed hundreds of thousands of Indians in this century could have been avoided.
