How did the big dipper get its name?

0

The name is not commonly used anywhere except North America. I’ve heard that the name may have originated in the days of the Underground Railroad, when escaped slaves from the southern USA used the Dipper to find their way north to safety in Canada.

I was told that it looked like a big dipping spoon.

The real name is Ursa Major but its called the big dipper because of its shape. When you connect all of the stars it looks kind of like a soup ladle or a saucepan. Its called the “big” dipper to distinguish it from the little dipper.
