How did the Bible influence the Last Supper and art?
Before the printing press was invented the only copies of the Bible were created in Monasteries by Monks (beautiful illustrated manuscripts). Artists of the time were commissioned by wealthy patrons to create certain works of art, usually biblical, and the Church of Rome and it’s Popes were one of the biggest patrons. There were also certain rules about what could be painted. Themes of paintings were supposed to be grand themes of Bible heros or Mythological figures, this changed when the Impressionists began to paint pictures of everyday life and peasants, and one reason they were so controversial.
