How did the Atlantic and Geffen Records jobs come about?
I’d been working three different jobs: DJ-ing at a station in Middletown, N.Y., and for a company located near Ellensville, which supplied DJs to the Catskills resorts like Kutchers; interning at a recording studio, Platinum Island, and working at a record store in Middletown and wanted something more stable and more into the industry. I looked at my record collection, and a lot of the music I loved emanated from the record companies located at 75 Rockefeller Plaza — Geffen, Warner, Atlantic, Elektra, etc. — so I went to that building with a ridiculous looking resume printed on velvet paper and started dropping it with the receptionists on every floor. In the elevator, a man saw my resumes and said, “You know that’s going straight in the bin, right?” Then he told me to go to the 24th floor and ask for Virginia, and tell her Chris sent me.
