Franz Ferdinand was assassinated by Gavrilo Princip, who was originally from Serbia. Franz Ferdinand was the archduke of Austria-Hungary, which controlled a region called Bosnia which used to be part of Serbia. Gavrilo traveled to Serbia and became a part of a terrorist group called the Black Hand, and they plotted Ferdinand’s demise because they and many others wanted Bosnia to be a part of Serbia again. When Princip shot the archduke and his wife fatally, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, Princip’s homeland. This brought up many secret alliances, and many countries were helping out others in their alliances. Aka, Great War.
