How did the animation world change when Communism fell?
The end of Communism was the best thing that could happen to all of us, what we needed, what we were waiting for, what we could not believe it was happening, but it was the worst thing that could happen to animation. Because up to that moment, there was a State that supported the studies of short animation films. In a point, as they received the money from the State, they didn’t have to think of the market because there was not one. After, things changed, as everybody knows. Now we have started with the subsidies Committee. The State gives half of the necessary money and each one has to get the other half. I think it is more difficult, but I also think it is fairer. Have you always been in Prague? I work and live in Prague, but I was some time in San Francisco, for some years, and then I came back because I was offered to make a “human beings” film.
