Well, I can tell you that Thomas Jefferson and James Madison (Democratic-Republicans) were pretty pissed off about the Alien and Sedition Acts. Alexander Hamilton and John Adams (the Federalists) used fear of war with France to step all over free speech rights and to imprison any foreigners they believed were criticizing the government. It’s a bit like today’s USA Patriot Act.
