The First World War’s effect on Germany was devastating. Apart from the tremendous loss of life felt on all sides of the war (22 million men), Germany’s economy was in shambles after the numerous capitulations that it was forced to make in the post-war period. This humiliating loss, in conjunction with economic and social instability, set the stage for Hitler’s Nazi party and an era of nationalist discourse.
