How did the administrative and economic unification of India under the British rule promote Indian nationalism?
( 8 marks) Ans. The very existence of foreign rule and its common oppression of the Indian masses irrespective of territory, caste and creed went a long way in promoting Indian nationalism. The century of the British rule affected throughout India. . The British conquered India and converted it into a colony whose existence depended on the mother nation. I.e. Britain. Their rule brought about a semblance of political unification of the country which, for the first time created a sense of unity and brotherhood among the Indians. The uniformity in law and order all over India also created an Indian national identity. The setting up of Industries and trade brought about an economic unification. Due to centralization of the British rule in India, drought in one part of the country affected prices of the essential goods in other parts of the country. The British introduction of new means of communications such as the railways, roadways, highways, television and press connected the Indians.
