How did Subaru obtain its expertise in car manufacturing?
FHI is the successor to Nakajima Aircraft, originally established as the Aircraft Research Laboratory in 1917 by Chikuhei Nakajima. Nakajima first produced airplanes for the Japanese navy, but soon left to establish Japan’s leading aircraft manufacturing company. When World War II ended, the company sought new ways to make use of the technologies garnered in aircraft production, and formed Fuji Heavy Industries (FHI), which created Japan’s first prototype motor scooter.
