I think he just spoke to them and treated them with dignity. Animals respond to that. I don’t think it is recorded that they ever spoke back, but he was pretty intuitive and knew generally what they wanted. He was a cluey guy with a big heart.

St. Francis just spoke to them with his mind and his heart. He also listened with his soul and knew they were communicating with him. He was such a wonderful and truly good human being, and animals always know.
