The teachings contained in the Science of Mind are ancient. The Science of Mind as it is taught today was founded by Ernest Holmes. Holmes was born January 21, 1887 on a farm near Lincoln, Maine. He was the youngest of nine sons. He received very little formal education in his life, but from the beginning was very curious and an avid reader. In 1905, when he was 18, he moved to Boston. He worked mornings, evenings, and Saturdays so he could spend his afternoons in the library. While visiting his brother, William, in Lincoln, Maine he discovered a copy of Ralph Waldo Emerson’s Essays. He said “Reading Emerson was like drinking water for me.” In 1908 he enrolled in the Leland Powers School of Public Expression in Boston.
