How did religion in Ancient Rome have anything to do with the government?

I’m writing an essay…. yeah. I know already that the governments ran based on religion, but if anyone has anymore information on that, that would be awesome 🙂 Also, about the government of Ancient Rome: How did they run things so that it kept the civilization strong? A: There was absolutely ZERO separation of “church” (meaning religion) and state. The elite who ran the government were also the elites that controlled the mechanisms of the state religion. Auspices were taken before every senate meeting…consuls (and others) could end or prevent meetings because they “heard thunder” and other manuevers.
