How did Rebuilding Together Hartford, Inc. get started?
We are part of a national effort that started in Midland, Texas in 1973 when a group of people wanted to help repair homes for their elderly neighbors. In the fall of 1994 a team of Hartford-area volunteers representing many organizations and businesses determined to launch a Rebuilding Together effort in the state’s capital city. Throughout the last 12 years more than 4,000 volunteers have rehabilitated 300 homes, and several homeless shelters and non-profit facility. Almost all of the work happens in a single day. Projects included stair and porch repair, replacement of windows and furnaces, remodeling of kitchens, lots of painting, and the cleaning of numerous basements, attics and yards.
