How did q-tips get their name?
1) “Cotton swabs (British English: cotton buds) consist of a small wad of cotton wrapped around either one or both ends of a small rod, usually made of either wood, rolled paper, or plastic. They are commonly used in a variety of applications including first aid, cosmetics application, for cleaning, and arts & crafts. The cotton swab was invented by Leo Gerstenzang in the 1920s, who invented the product after attaching wads of cotton to toothpicks. His product, which he named “Baby Gays”, went on to become the most widely sold brand name, “Q-tip.” The term “Q-tip” is often used as a genericized trademark for any cotton swabs.” “Etymology: The “Q” means “Quality”, and the word “tip” describes the cotton swabs at the end of the stick. They are sometimes referred to by the British, Indians and South Africans as “ear buds” and are also known as ear-diggers, cotton-wool buds or ear-sticks.” Source and further information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Q-tips 2) “Q-Tip was born Jonathan Davis
