How did permaculture spread?
Mollison and Holmgren developed and refined their ideas, which they set forth in two detailed teaching manuals, Permaculture One and Permaculture Two. Permaculture was presented as a way of using and/or imitating natural systems to produce food, clothing, energy and shelter. Because permaculture worked with nature rather than limiting, restraining or exploiting nature, it offered a viable way to achieve and sustain a comfortable lifestyle without destroying nature. This powerful concept spread quickly. Thousands of students have studied permaculture in courses affiliated with major universities worldwide. Adding further to the credibility of the movement, the United Nations now utilizes permaculture in its programs.
