How did people learn to decipher the ancient Egyptian language ?
Though the hieroglyphics were deciphered in parts before based on the images that it will portray, the codex was still not clear until the discovery o the rosetta stone (many contributers have mentioned that so you know better) The same text was engraved on to the rosetta stone in 3 languages. since greek was widely understood by many scholars, it was quite easy for them to decipher the symbols. But since Hieroglyphics is like chinese conveying idea instead of language per se, the language itself is not deciphered clearly but the idea that the symbol convey, yes! What I mean by the last sentense If I show you the symbol of a cigarette with a line crossing it, it means it is trying to convey a “No Smoking”, in any language this is the idea it conveys but when I have to read it in french, I read “Defense de fumer”, in english “No Smoking”. catch my drift…
